Health & Safety Training

Health & Safety Training

Health & Safety training in the workplace is important for all employers and employees alike. RSMac Consulting Inc’s Learning Centre provides accessible and affordable training to both an employee looking to increase their skills, or an employer looking to provide training under legislative requirements.

Workplaces in Ontario need to meet certain training requirements to ensure compliance with federal and provincial legislation and regulations. There are four matters that require mandatory training for almost every workplace in Ontario:

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

Training must be provided by employers under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, S.O. 2005, c, 11 as stipulated by section 7 (and others) under the Ontario Regulation 191/11: Integrated Accessibility Standards.

Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS 2015) and Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)

Health Canada is the government body responsible for the overall WHMIS supplier-related laws under the Hazardous Products Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. H-3). However, WHMIS is also regulated in the workplace by the Provinces under their occupational health & safety legislation. In Ontario, for Provincially regulated employers, WHMIS is regulated under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. O.1 and the regulation R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 860: Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

Worker/Supervisor Health & Safety Awareness and Competency

Employers in Ontario are regulated under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. O.1 and training required for employees and supervisors are contained within the Ontario Regulation 297/13: Occupational Health and Safety Awareness and Training.

For Provincially regulated employers in Ontario, in addition to basic awareness training for every worker, employers with more than 20 employees are required to have a Joint Health & Safety Committee and all of the prescribed training as well as Certification Training.

Workplace Violence & Harassment

Both Federally Regulated and Provincially Regulated employers have legislation and regulations that deal with Workplace Violence & Harassment and the employers duty of care to its employees. In Ontario this is covered under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. O.1 under Part III.0.1 Violence and Harassment.

Employers need to provide training to workers on the contents of Workplace Violence and Harassments policies and supervisors on how to follow up on incidents and complaints.

Further to mandatory training under various legislation, an employers “due diligence” is often referred to in circumstances such as civil litigation, workplace inspections and complaints, accident investigations by the ministry of labour and criminal investigations by Police. It is suggested that in addition to the mandatory training required, employers consider the following areas to be of high priority in developing policy and training programs:

  1. Accident Investigation

  2. Fire Safety

  3. Personal Protective Equipment

  4. Return to Work programs

  5. Canada Labour Code / Ontario Employment Standards Training

  6. Work Refusals

  7. Workplace Inspections
